It's well known that falls are very dangerous for seniors. But do you know just how dangerous falls really are? The statistics are sobering. For example, did you know that:
- One third of seniors over the age of 65, and over half over the age of 80, will fall each year?
- Older adults who fall once are two to three times more likely to fall again?
- Fall are the leading cause of fatal injuries and the second leading cause of nonfatal injuries among North Carolinians age 65 and older?
These are only a few of the statistics. That's why the governor of North Carolina has declared September 19-24, 2011 as Falls Prevention Awareness Week. Click here for the govenor's proclamation, which contains more information on why it's so important to raise people's awareness on this ever-growing problem. The next thing to do is to prevent falls. Injuries from falls are largely preventable.
